Mancora, Peru

October 29th, 2008

The trip to Lima, Peru was a long one, and the flight left us slightly nervous flyers.  About 2 hours before we were due to land we hit some full on turbulence.  It wasn’t like normal turbulence - the plane just dropped and Josh went up in the air as he didn’t have his seat-belt on and was trying to snooze.  Oxygen masks fell from the ceiling above some seats and a call was made for any doctors on board to assist.  The only other call that was made was that we should fasten our seatbelts and they wouldn’t be serving anymore food!  We saw a few people that had head injuries that had been fixed up but we have since read that it may have been worse than we realised:
Iberia flight from Spain arrives to Peru with 23 injured passengers

We were greeted by Josh’s brother Jamie and his girlfriend Veronica - it was really cool to have someone waiting at the airport for us.  We had dinner with Veronica’s aunt, uncle and sister that night for Peruvian Chinese food (yum), then up at 2:30am for our flight to Piura.

The bus ride to Mancora took about 2 hours, and was an experience in itself, as the landscape will be almost desert like one minute, then coconut and banana tree plantations the next.  Plenty of crazy driving to keep us on our toes.

We stayed right on the beach in Mancora which was pretty amazing.  Unfortunately Josh got sick from something he ate so didn’t quite get to make the most of it.  Managed to go surfing though which was cool.

Managed to spend a day in Athens.  It was hot and busy, but the Acropolis was very cool.

Naxos Island, Greece

October 12th, 2008

After a pretty average night trying to sleep in Athens airport and being woken up at 4am by the security staff for sleeping on the floor of the airport museum we made our way to the port in Athens. Trying to sleep in the ‘economy’ seats on the 5 hour ferry was about as good as the airport museum floor but we got to Naxos just after midday.  It was good to feel the warm air as we stepped off the ferry and the locals heckled us to stay in their apartments.

We’ve finally had a real chance to relax and just be lazy, eat food, swim and lie on the beach.  The water is amazingly clear and blue here - we wish we had our snorkelling gear (we will just have to hire some)!  The people are probably some of the friendliest that we have met in Europe, the prices the cheapest, and the food has been some of the best so far - so we are really loving it!

Not all is so beautiful though, as we hired a car and drove around the island, away from the tourist areas, and saw so many half built buildings and a lot of land that is not really being looked after at all.

We leave here in a few days for Peru - to see Josh’s brother Jamie, and although we really don’t want to leave here, we are looking forward to seeing family and another part of the world!

Roma

October 2nd, 2008

The trip to Rome took a bit but we got here after a bus to Bayonne, a train to San Sebastian, a taxi to airport, a flight to Madrid, a flight to Rome, a train to central Rome and a walk to hotel at midnight with a very bad map.

The weather has been really good and we’ve managed to see a lot of the sites.  While the sites have been very cool to see, we’re not huge fans of these big cities - they are madness.  We’re looking forward to Greece etc and getting back to beach where we belong!

South of France, WCT Surfing and Capbreton

October 2nd, 2008

We’ve had an awesome week staying in a small town called Capbreton in the South of France.  We stayed the week in a surf house run by James and Annie called H2O holidays which was a cool place to relax after the madness of Paris.

The WCT France surfing event was on and we watched 2 days of it, seeing lots of good surfing.  The rest of the time we spent at the beach, cycling around Capbreton/Hossegor and eating wicked 3 course meals for dinner each night cooked by James and Annie.

Paris

September 21st, 2008

We’ve spent the last 2 days in Paris and have done truckloads of walking. There really is a lot of cool stuff to see in this city. Lots of awesome buildings but also lot’s of people, dog crap, motorbikes, rubbish, and noise (which we got used to after a while).

We’re off to Hossegor on the train tomorrow to relax on the beach and hopefully see the top 44 surfers surfing  in the France WCT event!!!

Denmark

September 16th, 2008

Well we have managed to get a few spare moments to get online!!

Our travels so far have included Copenhagen (spending our first night in Denmark in the ‘red light district’, then saw Tivoli, a boat tour of the habour and The Little Mermaid), Aarhus, Skagen (to the top of Denmark), Mariager (to the family holiday home) and we are off to Middlefart today (to have a complete Danish lunch with family friends - and yes you say it how it is spelt).

It has been awesome to spend time with family and we have been taken very good care of!!!  The food has been really good and we’ve done a lot of eating!

We’ll try and get some more photos up when we get the chance.
